The Boy Who Harnessed the WindLocation: MalawiWhen bad weather and tobacco corporations end his father’s farming job in Wimbe, east of Kasungu in Malawi, 13-year-old William Kamkwamba (Maxwell Simba) uses his love of mechanics and an old library book to find a solution. This inspiring true story, adapted in 2019 from William’s own book by Chiwetel Ejiofor, was filmed in Wimbe itself, using his school and the house next door to the one where he grew up. While the realities of village life are intense, there are panoramas of huge skies and empty vistas too. Almost wholly shot outdoors, it used Auckland and surrounding towns for the pair’s brushes with civilisation and found Hec’s remote farmhouse in Puhoi, on the north-east of the North Island. Most of the action, though, takes place deep in the bush of the Waitakere Ranges, west of Auckland, and among the snow-capped peaks of the volcanic Central Plateau.
