The lights went out on cinemas around the country on Monday 4 January 2021 when all the UK’s multiplexes and indie cinemas had to shut. But, following the UK government’s roadmap plan for taking England out of lockdown, projectors can start whirring again on Monday 17 May, while drive-in and other outdoor screens can open earlier, from Monday 12 April. (Cinemas in Scotland are due to reopen on 17 May in plans announced on Tuesday 16 March while those in Wales and Northern Ireland will remain closed until further notice.)
